Comment, mention and vote
Comments are for questions, remarks and discussion; votes are how readers say what they value. Both are signed transactions, public and permanent, and each shows its cost before your wallet opens. All of it happens on the article page. Terms are explained in the glossary.
Comments and replies
Section titled “Comments and replies”You need a connected wallet and a Filebase or Pinata key saved in this browser: the comment’s text is pinned (kept online) on IPFS, the network that stores ARIADNE’s texts, with the same key as articles (save one on the publish page, tab “Upload”; see publish an article).
- At the bottom of the article page, under New comment, write your comment in Markdown (mathematics works too; images do not).
- Check the cost and click Pin and comment.
To answer a comment, click Reply under it, write, and click Pin and reply.
- Anyone can comment, including the article’s authors, in every status, even after a retraction.
- A comment cannot be edited or deleted. Each is a single text of at most 256 KiB (262 144 bytes).
- Replies nest up to six levels below a top-level comment. Threads deeper than three levels continue on their own page (“continue thread”).
- Show N replies and Hide replies fold a thread; Collapse all and Expand all act on every thread. Top-level comments can be ordered Oldest, Newest or Top (by votes); this browser remembers your choice.
- Reply under a review writes a comment that starts with “Re: review #N by @reviewer”. It notifies the reviewer and is shown under that review; see review an article.
Mentions
Section titled “Mentions”Write @name.algo or @ADDRESS anywhere in a comment to notify that person in their inbox.
@ADDRESSis a full Algorand address.@name.algois an NFD name (a name chosen by the owner of an address); it counts only through the address its owner verified on NFD, looked up when you write the comment. That address is what the blockchain records.- The box Mention: a participant, a name.algo or an address suggests the people taking part in the article and inserts the mention for you.
- Under the text, Notifies: lists who will be notified. A name with no verified address is reported (“no verified address on NFD, nobody is notified”) before you sign.
- At most 5 people per comment, and never yourself.
- After sending, the comment shows Notified: with the people the blockchain recorded.
In a review, a mention is shown as a link but notifies nobody; to notify someone, comment.
Resolve a comment
Section titled “Resolve a comment”When a comment’s point has been addressed, the submitter (the wallet that published the article) can click Mark resolved. The commenter receives 5 reputation in the article’s primary field.
- Only comments by people who are not authors of the article can be resolved.
- A comment is resolved once, for good; it can still be replied to and voted for.
- Resolving is possible while the article is a preprint, under review or a closed version.
- It costs only the network fee, no deposit.
| On | Button | What the vote does |
|---|---|---|
| an article | Vote | adds your weight to the article’s total; its authors later claim their share as reputation |
| a review | Useful | the reviewer receives 3 × your weight in reputation at once (nothing if you are an author of the article) |
| a comment | Upvote | the commenter receives your weight ÷ 5, rounded down, in reputation at once |
How voting works:
- Click the button: the cost and the rules appear below it.
- Click Confirm: vote (or Confirm: useful, Confirm: upvote) and sign. The button becomes an inactive Voted, Useful or Upvoted.
Rules:
- Weight. Your vote weighs 1 + the square root of your reputation in the article’s primary field, rounded down, at the moment you vote: 1 with no reputation, 4 with 9, 11 with 100. See reputation and vote weight.
- Once, for good. Each person votes once per article, review or comment, and a vote can never be changed or withdrawn. There are no downvotes.
- Not your own. Authors cannot vote for their own article, reviewers for their own review, commenters for their own comment. Authors may mark reviews useful (it grants nothing) and upvote comments.
- Declared co-authors. If you are declared as a co-author and have not confirmed, voting for the article means you can never confirm.
- Small votes on comments. A comment upvote from someone whose weight is below 5 (reputation below 16) is recorded but grants nothing.
- Daily limit. An address gains at most 50 reputation per field per day; for reviews and comments, what exceeds it is lost.
Where you cannot vote
Section titled “Where you cannot vote”Votes for an article, its reviews and its comments are accepted while it is a preprint, under review or a closed version. While it is disputed or retracted, nobody can vote; the article page says “Votes are not accepted while the article is …”.
Scores in lists
Section titled “Scores in lists”The feed, search results and other lists show each article’s score on its left: the total weight of its votes, with the number of votes in its tooltip. The score is not a button: you vote only on the article page, where the cost and the rules are shown.
What it costs
Section titled “What it costs”| Action | Storage deposit (ALGO) |
|---|---|
| Comment or reply | 0.0818 the first time in a field, then 0.0565 |
| Vote for an article | 0.0289 |
| Vote for a review or a comment | 0.0321 |
| Resolve a comment | 0 |
Each action also pays the network fee (currently 0.001 ALGO per transaction). The first comment in a field costs more because it creates your own reputation record for the article’s primary field. Deposits are not paid to anyone: they stay locked in the protocol. See costs and deposits.
