Link your ORCID iD

On ARIADNE your identity is your wallet address (see Identity: addresses, names and ORCID). Linking your ORCID iD (16 characters, like 0000-0002-1825-0097) ties that address to your ORCID record, so that readers see who you are. It takes two steps: you declare the iD from your wallet, and you add your ARIADNE profile to your ORCID record. When both point at each other, the iD is verified.

Once the iD is verified:

  • readers see your ORCID iD and the name from your ORCID record on your profile and next to your address on your articles;
  • citations, bibliographies and Zenodo drafts use that name (see Cite an article);
  • co-authors can find your address by typing your iD in the publish form (see Co-authors);
  • your profile shows the contact details your ORCID record makes public, and the citations of all your works as OpenAlex counts them;
  • if you have at least 3 works in an article’s area on OpenAlex, your reviews of that article can count toward its Peer-reviewed seal, even before you have reputation in its field.
  • Connect your wallet (see Wallets and your address).
  • Have a little ALGO for the network fee: about 0.001 ALGO. Linking an iD needs no storage deposit (see Costs and deposits).
  • Have your ORCID record at hand: you will sign in at orcid.org. On TestNet too, ARIADNE reads the real, public ORCID registry, so you link your real record.
  1. Open your profile: Profile in the main menu, or My profile in the account menu. On TestNet it is https://ariadne.press/testnet/u/<your address>.
  2. Find the ORCID iD section (on the Activity tab; only you see it). Type your iD in Your ORCID iD. You may paste it with or without hyphens, or as an orcid.org link. The last character is a check character: if it does not match, the form says so before anything is signed.
  3. Press Link this iD. The cost appears; press Link 0000-… and sign in your wallet.
  4. The page says “Linked. The page updates once the indexer has read the declaration.”

The declaration is a transaction of the ARIADNE contract (declare_identity) that only emits an event: it stores nothing in the contract and needs no deposit (DECISIONS D-106).

Step 2: add your profile to your ORCID record

Section titled “Step 2: add your profile to your ORCID record”

The page now shows three steps and your profile address with a Copy button.

  1. Sign in at orcid.org and open your record.
  2. Under Websites & social links, add a link titled ARIADNE with the address of your profile exactly as the page shows it, for example https://ariadne.press/testnet/u/<your address>.
  3. Leave its visibility at Everyone, so that ARIADNE can read it.

The ARIADNE indexer (the service that reads the blockchain and builds what the website shows) reads your public ORCID record about every ten minutes during the two days after you link the iD, then once a week. Linking the same iD again starts the frequent checks again. If ORCID does not answer, the last result is kept and the check is tried again.

Your profile shows the result of the last check and when it ran:

Result What your profile says
pending “Not checked yet: ARIADNE reads your ORCID record within a few minutes.”
verified “Verified: your ORCID record lists this profile.”
unlinked “Your ORCID record does not list this profile yet (or the link is not public).”
missing “ORCID does not know this iD, or the record is deactivated.”
invalid “This iD has a wrong check character. Link the right one.”

If the result stays “unlinked”, check that the address on ORCID is exactly the one your profile shows (the network part, /testnet, included) and that its visibility is Everyone.

Until the iD is verified, the website shows it only to you; readers never see an iD that is not verified. (The declaration itself is public on the blockchain from the start.)

On your profile, under your name or address:

  • the ORCID icon with the link https://orcid.org/<your iD> and the name on your record;
  • what your record shows to everyone: Affiliation (current employments), Email, Web (your websites) and Country, with the line “From the public ORCID record; its owner edits it on orcid.org”. The ARIADNE link itself is not repeated. Nothing is typed into ARIADNE and nothing of this goes on the blockchain; when you change your record, the profile follows at the next check (DECISIONS D-124);
  • Citations (all works): the citations of all the works of your iD as OpenAlex (an open index of scholarly works) counts them, with the number of works and the citations of each of the last five years, rechecked with your ORCID record. If OpenAlex does not know your iD, nothing is shown (DECISIONS D-125). This count is separate from the citations between ARIADNE articles and the Thread Score (see Citations and Thread Score).

On your articles, the author list shows your ORCID name and the iD icon next to your address.

In search, people can be found by their verified ORCID name or iD, and articles can be filtered by “Authors with a verified ORCID iD” or by an author’s iD (see Search).

  • Link another iD, or Link again or another iD while it is not verified, opens the form again. A new declaration replaces the previous one; repeat step 2 for the new iD.
  • Unlink signs an empty declaration (Unlink my ORCID iD, network fee only). The iD, your ORCID name and everything read from your record disappear from your profile, and citations use your NFD name or address again.

The declaration is a public transaction on the blockchain. Anyone can see which iD an address declared and when, and unlinking only marks it inactive: the declaration stays in the chain history for ever. This holds on TestNet as on MainNet. The contact details shown on your profile are whatever your ORCID record shows to everyone; to hide one, change its visibility on ORCID. See Privacy and permanence.
