Search
ARIADNE searches the full text of every article, review and comment, and finds people. The search runs on the ARIADNE indexer (the service that reads the blockchain and builds what the website shows). It reads the texts from IPFS, the storage network where articles live, and keeps only those that match their fingerprint on the blockchain (DECISIONS D-120, D-121). Reading and searching need no wallet.
Open it from Search in the main menu, or from the search field of the feed. On TestNet:
https://ariadne.press/testnet/search. Press / anywhere on the page to jump back to the search field.
The three tabs
Section titled “The three tabs”| Tab | Searches | Each result shows |
|---|---|---|
| Articles | title, abstract, keywords, the text, the authors (address, verified ORCID name and iD), field names, DOIs and CID | title, matched passages, type, status, seal, fields, authors, date, votes, reviews, comments, “cited by N”, DOI, number and version |
| Reviews and comments | the text of every review, comment and reply | the passage, its kind (a reply to a review says so), recommendation, author and article |
| People | verified ORCID names, ORCID iDs and the beginning of addresses | name or address, activity and reputation |
When you have typed a query, each tab shows how many results it has, so you can see at once whether your words appear in reviews or people rather than in articles. Results come in pages of 20.
Writing a query
Section titled “Writing a query”Accents and case do not matter, and words are matched by their stem: “sleeping” also finds “sleep”.
| You type | It finds |
|---|---|
sleep memory |
both words, in any order (every word is required) |
"memory consolidation" |
the exact phrase |
sleep -dream |
“sleep” without “dream” |
sleep OR dream |
either word |
neuro* |
words that begin with “neuro” |
title:sleep |
the word in one part only |
alice.algo, author:ADDRESS |
articles by that author (an NFD name is turned into its address) |
doi:10.5281/zenodo.123 or a bare DOI |
the article that declared that DOI |
cid:bafy… |
the article that has a version with that CID |
#12 (or id:12) |
article number 12 |
The parts you can limit a word to are title:, abstract:, keyword:, body: (the text), author: (a name or an
address) and field: (field names, DOIs and CID). A few synonyms work too: summary:, tag:, text: and by:.
A word before a colon that is not one of these is searched as an ordinary word, and the page says so.
Wildcards inside words
Section titled “Wildcards inside words”| You type | Meaning |
|---|---|
wom?n |
? is exactly one letter or digit: woman, women |
*ology |
* is any number of letters or digits, within one word: biology, psychology |
neur*sis |
neurosis, neuropsychosis |
A * at the end of a word is the ordinary prefix search above. A ? that ends a word is read as a question mark
(“what is sleep?”). A wildcard needs at least two letters besides the ? and *.
Regular expressions
Section titled “Regular expressions”For anything more precise, write a regular expression (JavaScript syntax) between slashes: /memor(y|ies)/,
/^sleep/. It can be limited to one part (title:/^the /) or excluded (-/x/). Expressions and wildcards are tested on
the texts without accents, case ignored, and their matches are marked in the results. Reviews, comments and people
accept them too.
Limits, because an expression can take a very long time on many texts:
- at most 200 characters per expression, and 5 wildcards or expressions per query;
- each search may spend 2 seconds on them; past that the page says the expression “takes too long over this many texts: make it more specific, or add words or filters”;
- all searches together may spend 20 seconds per minute on them; past that the page says they “are busy: try again in a minute”.
A broken expression matches nothing, and the page says why. Searches without wildcards or expressions have no such limit.
Filters
Section titled “Filters”Filters are in the Filter panel beside the results. On screens narrower than 1 024 pixels the panel starts closed unless a filter is in use; open it with Filter. Each group of filters starts folded and stays open while one of its filters is in use. Every option shows how many results it would give with the other filters you chose. Ticks and dates apply at once; typed values apply with Enter or Apply.
Article filters
Section titled “Article filters”Three quick switches sit above the results:
- Seal: Any, or Peer-reviewed: only articles that hold the Peer-reviewed seal now.
- Reviews: Any, Reviewed, or Not yet.
- DOI: Any, With, or Without (only DOIs whose record does not contradict them count).
The filter panel has these groups:
| Group | Options |
|---|---|
| Area | the six areas of fields; an article matches by its main or second field |
| Field | the fields that have results; Main field only ignores the second field |
| Type | article, notes, amendment, dataset, replication |
| Status | preprint, under review, closed version, disputed, retracted. Retracted articles are hidden unless you choose them. |
| Published | one year with a click, or From and Until dates |
| Reviews and votes | Reviewed: accept (or minor revision, major revision, reject): articles that received such a review; Vote weight at least; Comments at least |
| DOI and ORCID | Verified DOI; Authors with a verified ORCID iD |
| People | Author (address or name.algo) with Submitter only; Reviewed by; Commented by; Author’s ORCID iD; Only by people I follow (with a wallet connected) |
| Language and licence | from the article headers, when any article declares them |
| More | Keywords (comma-separated, all required); Revised (more than one version); Has amendments; Amends article #; Content checked; Updated from and Until (date of the last version) |
Each filter in use appears as a chip above the results; click a chip to remove it, or Clear all filters.
Review and comment filters
Section titled “Review and comment filters”Kind (Reviews, Comments and replies), Recommendation, and Where and who: Written by, On article #, Field of the article, From and Until.
People filters
Section titled “People filters”Role (Authors, Reviewers, Commenters), With a verified ORCID iD, and Reputation in a field, which also shows each person’s reputation in that field.
Sorting
Section titled “Sorting”| Tab | Sorts |
|---|---|
| Articles | Best match (with a query), Top, Newest, Oldest, Most voted, Most reviewed, Most discussed, Recently updated, Most cited on ARIADNE |
| Reviews and comments | Best match, Newest, Oldest, Most voted |
| People | Best match, Reputation, Publications, Reviews written, Recently active |
Without a query, articles are sorted by Top, the score of the feed: the weight of the votes divided by (age in days + 2) raised to the power 0.8, so that recent, well-voted articles come first. Most cited on ARIADNE counts citations from other ARIADNE articles that are not retracted (see Citations and Thread Score).
A search is a link
Section titled “A search is a link”Everything you chose (query, tab, filters, sort, page) is in the page address. Copy it to share a search, bookmark it, or come back to it later; the browser’s Back and Forward buttons walk through your changes. For example, recent peer-reviewed articles that mention a phrase:
https://ariadne.press/testnet/search?q=%22memory+consolidation%22&sealed=true&sort=newThe page works without scripts, too.
Save from the results
Section titled “Save from the results”Every article in the results has a small Save button. It opens the same dialog as on the article page, where you tick private or public lists (see Lists and bibliographies).
Suggestions and recent searches
Section titled “Suggestions and recent searches”While you type, the field suggests titles (which open the article), keywords and fields (which become filters) and people (who open their profile). With the field empty it offers your last 8 searches. These are kept in this browser only; Forget recent searches clears them.
When nothing is found
Section titled “When nothing is found”Try fewer or other words, or a word ending in * to match its beginning (neuro* finds “neuroscience”). Remember that
retracted articles are searched only when you choose that status. If another tab has results for your words, the page
offers a button to it.
